Bridging the Merrimac was completed in oil paint using palette knives on a 30x24 archival linen panel. If you dine on the deck at Michael’s Harborside, in Newburyport, this is your view. I started the painting using brushes and quickly discovered that palette knives were best for capturing the rugged and weathered structure by laying down and scrapping back paint. I had many photos of this structure because I admire the shapes and light angles of this view, especially as sunset approaches. I wanted to capture the light that moment. Bridging the Merrimac was selected to hang at Newburyport Art Association’s annual regional art show, taking place Friday, May 21 to Saturday, June 26, 2021. It also hung in the 2026 Coming Home in celebration of Yankee Homecoming.

For this painting, I received the Janice Turner Award for Excellence in Oil Painting from the North Shore Arts Association, in Gloucester, MA, at its 2022 Exhibit New England exhibition.
